Currently, the Collège d'Enseignement Géneral et Professionnel (CEGEP) system is the only model of free post-secondary in North America. It has long been regarded as the prime example for high-quality, free post-secondary education. The positive effect free CEGEP has had on Québec is immeasurable and has been applauded from coast to coast.
In August of 2009, the Québec Liberal Party caucus proposed imposing tuition fees for CEGEP students and thus abolish one of the pillars to accessible education in Québec. The Dawson Student Union will stand firm in lobbying the government to keep CEGEP free and demanding that adequate government funding to institutions of higher learning become a top priority. With 210 000 jobs necessitating at least a CEGEP diploma being created between now and 2012, it is imperative that the government not impose any additional financial barriers limiting Québec student's access to education.
