Currently, students requesting financial aid from the government of Québec are allocated funds that suggest that one should be able to eat off of $7 a day of food. This formula was first draft in the mid 1980s and has not been adjusted since its implementation. With the cost of food rising at an alarming rate and a breakfast at Chartwells, the sole food-service provider of Dawson College, costing more then $7, it is both dangerous and ridiculous to expect students to be able to survive off of such menial funds.
Students often go into courses and exams malnourished and as such less able to fully learn. This is an injustice that must be corrected now.
The DSU will be launching an interactive media-based campaign to illustrate the flaws of the current financial aid system. If you would be interested in volunteering to eat off $7 a day of food, please stop by our office (2F. 2) or e-mail Mat for more information.
