Dawson College is one of the most intercultural institutions of higher learning in Canada. With students from over 100 countries making up the Dawson mosaic, it seems easy to say that we are tolerant and that racism with our institution low.
But is this really the case? For years, Dawson College has been associated the racialized nicknames students have bestowed to the various cafeterias.
The Student Union is launching a Task Force focused on experiences of racism in the Dawson College.
The Task Force consists of 3 members who will be present throughout the semester and take statements from racialized students, faculty and staff about their experiences on campus and possible solutions to racism. Participant’s statements can range from individual incidents to experiences of and perceptions about systemic racism in all aspects of the college experience.
Following these hearings the Task Force will prepare a report summarising the content of the hearings, identifying themes, and making recommendations for various institutional and governmental agencies.
